Magazine Reviews for The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing

I once heard that over 80% of graduates of natural therapies courses were unlikely to succeed in establishing a successful practice. At the time this sounded shocking, but on reflection makes sense. Most therapists get into their fields because they are passionate and skilled at what they practice, but let’s face it, few have concurrently completed marketing degrees! That’s why The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing is such a useful and imperative tool for anyone (not just natural therapists!) establishing a private business.
With easy-to-follow bite-sized chunks of practical, grounded advice, combined with a holistic overall plan to take you from concept to set-up and from expansion to goal setting for the future; if you have a natural therapy practice or are considering setting one up, this book is a must-read!
Whitelight Magazine - Review by Editor Adrian Moore.
It’s very rare for me to pick up a book & not put it down until I’m finished it but such was the case with The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing by Lawrence Ellyard. And it’s the first time in 12 years that I’ve actually reviewed anything, so one can gather how impressed I was with it.
I’ve lost count of the amount of times people have called me to ask advice on how to get started when they’ve just completed a course/ modality. They have their business cards, brochures & excitement but no idea what to do next. There is no budget for advertising they seem to think that it is all going to magically happen.
This book should be part of the syllabus when one is learning about their chosen field. Lawrence takes you through step by step what is needed to be financially successful in business within the Spiritual/ Natural Therapy world. And he does it in layman’s terms.
Lawrence is the founder of the International Institute of Complementary Therapists; his previous background was in Graphic Design, Advertising and marketing so he is well versed to shed some light on the ways to enhance your business.
The book covers such topics as Establishing your Professional Practice, Websites, Promotional Materials, Advertising, Creative Copywriting, Networking, Expanding your Business and Goal Setting for your Business just to name a few.
It is a brilliant read and well worth the RRP of $29.95. Website: www.spiritualmarketing.com.au and the book is distributed by Brumby Books.
Pointers Magazine, The Newsjournal of the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia - Review by Sandra Dexter
‘Spiritual marketing is defined as a way to share what you love to do and be financially supported by providing your services in order to help others’
In this book The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing Lawrence Ellyard offers a comprehensive and practical guide to advertising and marketing a natural therapy business. It is indeed refreshing to read a marketing book specifically written with natural therapists in mind.
Lawrence Ellyard is CEO and Founder of the International Institute for Complementary Therapists. He has worked as a natural therapy practitioner and teacher for more than 15 years. Prior to that he worked in graphic design, advertising and marketing.
After interviewing many therapists for this book, Ellyard believes that most natural therapists are poorly educated about advertising and promoting their natural therapy practice and often just look at what everyone else is doing.
‘The result is more advertisements that fail to be effective simply because almost everyone is copying everyone else’s badly written and poorly designed ads.
‘What I have also encountered amoungst many natural therapists who work in the wellness industry is that most do not earn enough or do not have enough clients to earn the kind of lifestyle they desire. Some have a complacent attitude to their financial situation, thinking that in order to do what you love to do they cannot become wealthy doing it. I am here to tell you that this is simply not true’
Ellyard covers many aspects of marketing including setting up a professional practice, turning an enquiry into a booking, how much to charge, how to sell yourself, rebooking clients, registering with search engines, creating effective promotional material, creative copy writing and networking, as well as chapters on how to grow your business for free and alternative ways to market your business.
In its 172 pages, Ellyard covers many relevant areas that you may not have considered as being marketing – indeed anything that will attract or deter clients should be considered. Ellyard’s book could help you broaden your view and consider a variety of ways to connect to clients.
For example, in the chapter on handling enquiries, Ellyard explains how to answer the inevitable question ‘How much?’
‘…don’t just blurt the price straight away. Instead tell them what they will get for their money first. You might say, “Can I explain to you what is involved with the treatment so you know what you are paying for?” Then tell them the fee and add value to what you are offering by telling them about your special offer. For example: “We also have a special offer, where if you pay in advance for three treatments, your third one is free, so you actually save $50.00”.’
The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing is easy to read and to translate into action. It’s a great marketing book for someone starting out or for someone wanting to take a fresh look at how they are operating their business and seeking new ideas to improve their business.

I found this book to be very informative, easy to read, and written with the Natural Therapist in mind. The Secrets of Spiritual Marketing contains some great advice for practitioners who have never met the challenges of advertising or running their own business before.
The book guides the reader through every step of the process of advertising and marketing your services or your business, across all the different media streams. It also covers all aspects of employment within the natural therapies Industry, which can be a very daunting experience for the new graduate or first time business owner.
This book will allay all of the novice’s fears and should be on recommended reading material lists in all colleges. In particular I found the exercises on self-evaluation very constructive and enlightening. For example, USP (Unique Selling Proposition) pages 48,50,51,52. Here the readers can evaluate their own personal strengths and use this information as a marketing tool. I recommend any student or new graduate who wants a successful business to try these exercises. I believe the student or early graduate would greatly benefit from this valuable marketing information.
