Kinesiology 101

Kinesiology is a method of aligning body and mind for health and happiness using muscle testing to find the root causes of an individual's ill health. It has its roots in practices of manual muscle testing that emerged in the early 20th century with a Boston-based orthopaedic surgeon called Robert W. Lovett.

Lovett was a pioneer who used this early form of muscle testing to gauge the level of disabilities in the case of nerve damage and polio. In 1949, Kendall and Kendall published follow-up work on Lovett’s testing, and it was this work that caught the attention of a Detroit Chiropractor called Dr. Goodheart in the early 1960s. Dr. Goodheart found that by testing and correcting the muscles of his clients he was able to support a deeper level of healing not available solely with chiropractic - apart from structural relief. By balancing certain muscles, he found that particular organ disturbances would go away. In so doing, he was able to link muscle tests with Chinese medicine and Chiropractic techniques, and called this burgeoning practice Applied Kinesiology.

In the early 1970s, Dr. John Thie D.C. a student of Dr. Goodheart's developed Touch for Health. Dr Thie's breakthrough was to recognise that muscles would change their integrity when under different stress stimuli. Using this understanding, he developed a system that traced muscular symptoms back to their root causes of energy blockage and dysfunction in lifestyle, outlook and activities. Touch for Health opened up Applied Kinesiology to the general public, from which it has evolved to form the contemporary modality of health known simply as Kinesiology.

The main type of kinesiology practiced at Bayside Kinesiology is HOW TO: Kinesiology? and Kinergetics, a dynamic and holistic approach which recognises that no two people are the same, and aims to bring your body back into homeostasis or internally regulated equilibrium, giving you greater understanding and leaving you feeling more in harmony with your environment.

Kinesiology is not a test of muscle strength, is not invasive, and does not require machines or complex diagnostic tools. It is an enlivening and enriching practice that helps us to understand others, and ourselves and often gives immediate answers to deep or unanswered and difficult questions that alternative medicines are unable to provide.

For example, if you have back pain, it can be:
Physical: I pulled a muscle while gardening
Mental: My back is against the wall and I think that I am not good enough can cause strong back muscle tension
Emotional: I support the weight of the world on my shoulders
Spiritual: I am not following my spiritual path, allowing energy to flow through my spine
Nutritional: I didn’t drink enough water and my kidneys are not detoxifying properly

We all experience dis-integration in our lives, be it physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or nutritional.
In fact, it’s the number one cause of disease in the world because it causes the natural communication lines in the body to break down. When the body forgets how to communicate with itself, injury and illness occur.

All types of stress (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and nutritional) cause breakdowns in the body’s already busy contours of communication.
When there is a disconnection, the body will adapt, but will also become less efficient. The parts forget how to work as a team and start segmenting themselves.

A symptom is the last stage of imbalance - the body is calling out for assistance – it needs to be understood.

In ‘HOW TO: Kinesiology?’ a therapist asks questions of the client’s body to find out what area is a priority to address. A kinesiology technique is used to help the body balance and restore communication. Clients remain fully clothed during treatment and muscle testing is painless. ‘HOW: TO Kinesiology?’ Helps us ask specific questions. The result is greater knowledge, awareness and health-giving life force. We have specific kinesiology manuals and short accredited courses focusing on the major topics that most people need healing with.

‘HOW: TO Kinesiology?’ Asks which part needs improved communication and harmony throughout the body. The body is designed to heal and grow, this happens when the body remains connected and communication pathways are able to work as a team.

Once the body has been reminded of the issue, it can initiate its own healing process. Your body knows how to heal itself. It just needs to be reminded how.

Your body is designed to heal itself. When all the parts and systems of the body communicate with each other, healing happens naturally. However, stress can cause communication breakdowns, resulting in discomfort and disease. ‘HOW TO: Kinesiology?’ identifies these breakdowns and asks the body for the priority and how it needs to heal in order to restore communication between all levels of the body.  Click here for more
